How Much Electricity and money can be
saved ?
The Table below gives approximate savings on electricity and money:
|
Hot water requirement |
100 Ltrs |
|
Energy consumed per day for heating 100 liters of water |
4.7 kwh |
|
Cost of electricity consumed per day to heat 100 liters of
water |
Rs. 22 (1 Unit= Rs. 4.5) |
|
Cost of electricity consumed per month |
22x30 = Rs. 660 |
|
Savings per year for 100 LPD solar system |
Rs. 6,600 (10 months
in a year) |
What is the Ideal size of solar water heater that
one should purchase?
An actual estimate of daily demand of hot water is the best way to decide on
the capacity of the system. A Solar system is capable of heating a fixed
quantity ( equivalent to its capacity) of water on a sunny day. On as sunny
winter day, on e collector (of area 2 sq.m.) can be expected to heat around 100
liters of water raising the temperature by 30-40 °C. Estimation can also be made
with the help of the table given below.
|
Application |
Typical Requirement of Hot Water at 60°C |
|
Household bathing |
20-25 liters per person per bath |
|
Household bathing using shower with a mixing tap |
30-35 liters |
|
Household bathing in bathtub (one filling) |
100 - 150 liters |
|
Wash basin with a mixing tap ( hand wash, brushing
of teeth, etc.) |
3-5 liters per person per day |
|
Kitchen washing |
5-7 liters per person per day |
|
Dishwasher |
40-50 liters per wash cycle |
|
Washing Machine |
40-80 liters per cycle |
in case the utility point are many or plumbing line is longer, the capacity
should be expanded further.
How do they work ?
Solar water heater works on the principle of thermosyphon that hot water has
lower density than cold water and thus has a tendency to rise. A selective
coated absorber inside the flat-plate collector absorbs the solar radiations to
heat the water flowing through Il The water circulates from the solar collector
to the inner container by natural thermosyphon
Is thre a product
suitable for hard warter?
1) INDIRECT HEATING TYPE
Ideally suited for hard water areas this system has provision for a tank
within the inner tank for raw water and distilled water respectively Solar
water heater heats the distilled water heater in the collector
thermosyphon process This heat IS transferred to the in the inner tank (Refer
drawing)
2) DIRECT HEATING TYPE
Most suitable for domestic application where water IS not hard In this system
raw water circulates from the solar collector to the inner container by
natural thermosyphon Temperature of the hot water in this case would be higher
that of the indirect system (Refer diagram)

How does the system function
on cloudy days?
On cloudy days heating of water in the solar system gets affected to some
extent On partially cloudy days some hot water output can be expected although
systems are available with a suitable electric backup heater to take care of hot
water demand on cloudy days
How long will the water stay
hot? Does one get hot water early in the morning when the sun is not there ?
Hot water produced by the solar system during the day is stored in
an insulated storage tank The Insulation of the tank is such that water remains
hot with out significant drop in temperature for around 24 hrs High quality of
PUF insulation ensures the same Thus water heated during the previous day
becomes available for use the next morning
What is the ideal size of
solar water heater that one should purchase ?
An actual estimate of daily demand of hot water is the best way to decide on
the capacity of the system A solar system is capable of heating a fixed quantity
(equivalent to its capacity) of water on a sunny day On a sunny winter day one
collector (of area 2 sq.m) can be expected to heat around 100 litres of water
raising the temperature by 30-40°C Estimation can also be made with the help of
the table given below.
What is the site
requirements for installation of a solar water heating system?
The prime requisite of a solar system is availability of
unobstructed sunlight for the whole day The collector should be oriented due
south for maximum Interception of sunlight As far as possible the area should be
flat, away from rainwater drains and close to the bathrooms where hot water is
to be supplied Cold water inlet to the solar tank should have a head of at least
1 m (i.e 2.5 m from the base of the system).
What are the
operational requirements?
Domestic solar systems function virtually unattended
* If the system is not to be used during summer it should be drained of water
and the collector should be covered
* Dust deposition on the collector would reduce its efficiency Therefore it
should be cleaned at least once a week
What are the
maintenance requirements
Solar water heating system does not need significant maintenance In case of hard
water scale deposition may take place in the collectors over the years The same
should be descaled under the supervision of authorised service personnel only
What is the
expected life of a solar water heater?
Good quality solar water heater can last for 15 -20 years.
Are there any
financial incentives from the government on these systems?
The Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) provides Soft loans with
interest @ 2% to domestic users 3% -5% to institutional users from Indian
Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) public/private sector banks
scheduled cooperative banks RBI approved non-banking financing companies
intermediaries of IREDA and other public/private financing institutions (Fls)
The borrowers are eligible for loan upto 85% of the cost of the system repayable
over a period of five years
How does on
identify a good solar water heater?
Look for some of the following specifications in a solar water heater before
purchasing the same
Tank:
Rust-proof non-metallic outer body
High quality injected PUF insulation with the right density and optimum
thickness for maximum heat retention
Inner container of high-grade stainless steel like SS-304L welded using fully
automatic Plasma TIG welding machines to avoid leakage
Special treatment (Passivation) for the stainless steel inner container for
protection against corrosion due to hard water Electrical backup (if provided)
with reliable
heating element & Thermostat cum cut-out from a reputed brand with
necessary safety approvals
Collector:
Flat-plate collector with a durable aluminum frame preferably without any screw
on the top face of the collector -for complete protection against water seepage
Rust-proof material for the back-sheet of the flat-plate collector
Selective
coated copper absorber to ensure high absorption and low emission
Well engineered mounting configuration to lend greater stability to the entire
system
In addition to this one should go for a reputed brand that ensures a high
quality product and provides a high standard of service
